Description
This bird striking feature is the black tipped red bill. The upper mandible is much shorter than the lower.The lower mandible cuts through the water surface like a pair of scissors grabbing small fish and crustaceans. No other western hemisphere speciesfeeds in this manner. Usually seen in flocks either in flight or loafing on the beach.This common coastal species is observed all year round in southern Florida.
